It's been another action-packed week, as you will see from this newsletter. We are particularly looking forward to Open Evening next Thursday, which is an event for all students and families who are considering joining us for Year 7 in 2023. In addition, we have a plethora of activities on top of lessons, including auditions for our next school production (see below for details!), clubs being readied to start up on Monday, a visit from Jesus College, Cambridge, and meetings with Head Students to plan Student Council elections.
We have had a few questions about how we go about determining classes through the school, especially in years 7-9. A few notes follow, which I hope are helpful:
- We do not 'stream' any year groups (which is a process where different groups of students have entirely separate timetables from each other, dependent on ability/prior attainment).
- We operate a 'mixed economy' of mixed groups (a wide range of ability/prior attainment) and set groups (a narrower range of ability/prior attainment).
- Individual faculties each have their own approach to this, which responds to the curriculum design, the specific nature of the subject, and other factors such as class size.
- There is no central single school approach - this has been the case for a number of years at MCS, and we have no plans to change this.
I hope this is helpful. If you have questions about class allocations then please feel free to contact us. Your child's Form Tutor, or the relevant Head of Faculty or Director of Learning are all good first points of contact. You can find these details on the staff page of our website.
All the best for a sunny autumnal weekend.
