Welcome to Monmouth Comprehensive School

Dear Parents and Students

Welcome to Monmouth Comprehensive School

In our school we encourage everyone to have the highest expectations of themselves and each other as together we Learn to Lead our Lives.

We are proud of our students’ academic achievements.  Just as importantly, we are a school that cares.  We believe that students need to feel comfortable and secure in order to learn and, as a school, we put as much emphasis on creating a supportive and happy environment as we do on academic success.  We achieve both.

I look forward to working with you to ensure the very best learning and life for the young people in our care.

MODERN LANGUAGES

MODERN LANGUAGES FACULTY

Faculty Leader: Miss J Snook

The Faculty has an exceptionally rich language provision, offering French, German and Spanish; all are taught to examination level by specialist teachers.

The MFL Faculty is exceptionally well resourced with interactive whiteboards and projectors which help an enthusiastic team of teachers to deliver a variety of teaching and learning methods. Constant use of current material, through access to the Internet, ensures lively and up to date materials are used in lessons.

KEY STAGE 3

Students study French in KS3. In Year 7, French is studied for 4 periods per fortnight and this provision continues into year 9. (Students also have the opportunity to learn, German, Italian, Spanish and Japanese as extra curricular activities).

Students have opportunities to visit France throughout Years 7 and 8.

Languages are taught in a fun and rewarding environment, which will enrich their experience of different cultures.

KEY STAGE 4

Modern Languages are optional in KS4, but parents and students are advised to have regard for their importance in a balanced curriculum. Students may continue their French and may also take an ab initio German or Spanish course: all three courses lead to examination at GCSE level. There are varied opportunities for foreign visits offering cultural and linguistic benefits.

IN THE SIXTH FORM

The Faculty offers French, German and Spanish to AS and Advanced Level. These courses enable students to develop their linguistic skills through a variety of activities and resources related to the syllabus topics. At AS Level, these include the areas of Leisure & Lifestyle and the Individual & Society and, at A2 Level, Social Political and Environmental issues.

At A2 Level, students also have the opportunity to study literature and film, which supports language and a wider understanding of culture
