Welcome to Monmouth Comprehensive School

Dear Parents and Students

Welcome to Monmouth Comprehensive School

In our school we encourage everyone to have the highest expectations of themselves and each other as together we Learn to Lead our Lives.

We are proud of our students’ academic achievements.  Just as importantly, we are a school that cares.  We believe that students need to feel comfortable and secure in order to learn and, as a school, we put as much emphasis on creating a supportive and happy environment as we do on academic success.  We achieve both.

I look forward to working with you to ensure the very best learning and life for the young people in our care.

MATHEMATICS

MATHEMATICS FACULTY

Faculty Leader: Miss R Osman

KEY STAGE 3

Mathematics enables all students to be numerate in their world and to think in a way that encourages critical awareness through problem solving, reasoning and communicating understanding.  Students need to be able to apply, combine and adapt skills to be able to use Mathematics independently throughout their lives.

Students follow Themes designed by the Mathematics Faculty and are encouraged to use real life Mathematics and approaches used include problem solving, investigations and group work .  At the end of this Key Stage, students should be able to perform mental calculations, discuss and use problem-solving strategies and appreciate the breadth of applications of Mathematics, as a source of enjoyment, as well as a vital set of skills.

KEY STAGE 4

In key Stage 4, students prepare for their GCSE examinations. At Monmouth Comprehensive School we use the WJEC Board.

GCSE Mathematics can be entered at two levels:

Foundation Tier involves basic mathematical content and avoids excessive abstract algebraic work. The examination grades available are C - G.

Higher Tier is considerably more demanding, covering concepts and skills needed for Advanced Level work. Grades available are A* - D.

Suitable Higher Tier candidates will also study GCSE Statistics, which includes a controlled task component.

IN THE SIXTH FORM

At Monmouth we offer A/AS Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics using the WJEC modular course.

The modules provide considerable choice but we encourage all students to study a balance of Pure and Applied Mathematics. Some modules are partly assessed by coursework tasks, providing interesting challenges to individuals.

We also give some students the opportunity to improve on their previous GCSE grade by attending a ‘one-year’ GCSE class. This is useful to students studying AS levels in other subjects where there is a university entrance requirement to have at least a grade C in Mathematics.
